Ngǎ’ko, mᾱ é nā’ kά? Ǒ ndʉ́ cak, ndʉᾱ bᾱnkwēn. Wěn mᾱnēhsī, pō tēh yǐ wúzά nshu cak.
Nga’ko, qu’est-ce que ta maman a préparé ? Plus tu dissimules ton diner, plus les visiteurs arrivent. Quand quelqu’un est pressé on prélève sa nourriture à l’entrée de la marmite (mal cuite).
Ngako, what has your mom prepared for lunch? The more you hide your meal, the more visitors come in. When someone is in a hurry, his food is taken on top part of the pot (not well done)
Ngα̌ ntie’e ndə̄ ya wúzᾱ mα nά mashîŋ lə́cak: n sǐ’ njat njwēn nshwī bᾱ; n sǐ’ njat njéh ndhímōh bᾱ.

Timóh. Mēngoó ntʉ̄ᾱ cǎk ti (timōh), mαnjwásí ntám nkhʉ̌nken. Cak sí’ ngōp bᾱ, mα nshi kάmie, cak khʉ̄.
Foyer. La jeune fille met sa marmite au feu, et bavarde au téléphone: soit les aliments cuisent mal, soit par manque d’eau, ils brulent dans la marmite.
Hearth. The young girl puts her pot at fire, and talkative on the telephone: either the food cooks badly, or for lack of water, they burn in the pot.

Wúzᾱ ō sī mʉshʉ́ά nshǔ a bᾱ: sóh shʉα, ngwǎ’ cōh. Bᾱ mα o sī kάzᾱ wū ā bᾱ, ǒ si sōk nzhǐnzhǐ nu.
Je n’ai pas d’appétit pour ta nourriture: trop de sel, et le piment est trop fort. Si tu ne veux pas manger, ne raconte pas des histoires.
I do not have appetite for your food: too much salt, and the pepper is too strong. If you do not want to eat, does not tell tall tales.
Mīā Túnkə̌ ndēn mα̂ : ngα̌ nzᾱ kwele’, mfāt mbαα, nzᾱ kʉkhʉ̄ᾱ. Mīā Fʉ̄’sαα bαmfāt yǐ nkwe yāā. Nukά ?
Pour dire « manger », le haut-nkamois utilise tantôt « nza », tantôt « mfat » , tandis que l’originaire de Bafoussam utilise un seul terme : « mfu ». Pourquoi ?
To say “to eat”, the haut-nkamois uses “nza sometimes”, sometimes “mfat”, while the originating one in Bafoussam uses only one term: “mfu”. Why?
Yāā lά mvā’sī pʉ. Ngα̌ nkwá’sí mά pó nzᾱ pūātop wúzᾱ: nzᾱ pēē; mfāt yi kά ngά’ lά. Mvʉ̄ᾱ ǎ mfāt mbαα, mᾱnzᾱ njo’. Tᾱ’ ngʉ̄nə̌ mfāt njo’ mbα̌h.
Difficile à expliquer. Nous pensons qu’on utilise pour les aliments mous (très cuit ou écrasés ou pilés) manger le taro: on utilise « mfat » pour ce qui est dur et exige un effort de mastication: le chien mange la viande (dur) et la patate (mou). Le cochon mange (mfat) la patate crue (dur).
Difficult to explain. We think that one uses “nza” for soft food (very cooked or crushed) : example “to eat the taro”. One uses “mfat” as regards hard food that requires an effort of chewing: the dog eats (mfat) the meat (hard) and the potato (slackness). The pig eats (mfat) raw potato (hard).
Pα̌ Túnkə sí’ nzᾱ ndα̌’ wúzᾱ bᾱ: pó nzα pi, nzᾱ ntᾱ’, nzᾱ lōk, nzᾱ ndʉ̄ᾱ, nzᾱ nca’, nhó nkᾱᾱ wen nzᾱ. etc.
Les haut-nkamois ne mangent pas seulement la nourriture: ils « mangent » le profit, la tontine, l’association, la succession, le jugement, on emprunte et on mange la dette, etc. Nzᾱ entre dans toutes ces expressions.
The haut-nkamois do not eat only food: they “eat” the profit, the eat “jagy”, they eat (to be member of) associations, they eat house (to succeed to defunct father), they eat a court case, they borrow money and eat the debt, etc. “Nzα” is more widely used than “mfat”.
Pʉ bά ncāk lά , sí’ bᾱ pʉ kά nzᾱ lά bᾱ. Pα cʉ̄cǎk mbᾱ wū, pα zʉ̄zα̌ bᾱ wū !
